Weight Management
& Obesity Care

Obesity is a complex medical condition — not a matter of willpower. Dr. Saeed Riaz provides evidence-based, compassionate weight management care in Mississauga, combining lifestyle guidance, medical therapy, and specialist referrals to help you achieve lasting results.

Understanding Obesity

Obesity is defined as excess body fat that increases the risk of serious health conditions. It is diagnosed using Body Mass Index (BMI), waist circumference, and clinical assessment. A BMI of 30 or above is classified as obese; 25–29.9 is overweight.

Obesity significantly raises the risk of Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, joint problems, fatty liver disease, and certain cancers. It is influenced by genetics, hormones, medications, mental health, and environment — not simply diet and exercise alone.

Lifestyle Changes

Dietary improvements, increased physical activity, and behavioural coaching form the foundation of any weight management plan.

Medical Management

GLP-1 receptor agonists and other approved medications can significantly enhance weight loss when lifestyle changes alone are insufficient.

Bariatric Surgery Referral

For patients with severe obesity or significant obesity-related conditions, Dr. Riaz can provide referrals to bariatric surgery specialists.

Weight Loss Medications

GLP-1 receptor agonists represent a major advance in medical weight management. Dr. Riaz can assess your suitability for these medications and prescribe them as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

Important: All medications listed below require a prescription and medical assessment. They are not suitable for everyone. Side effects and contraindications vary. Always discuss with Dr. Riaz before starting any weight loss medication.

Bariatric Surgery Referral

Bariatric surgery — including gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and gastric banding — is the most effective long-term treatment for severe obesity. It is considered when lifestyle changes and medical management have not achieved sufficient results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is weight management covered by OHIP?

Consultations with Dr. Riaz for obesity and weight-related conditions are covered by OHIP. However, GLP-1 medications such as Wegovy and Ozempic are not covered by OHIP for weight loss alone. Coverage may be available through private insurance or the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) program if you have Type 2 diabetes. Dr. Riaz can help you navigate your coverage options.

Who is a candidate for GLP-1 weight loss medications?

GLP-1 medications are generally considered for adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or a BMI of 27 or higher with at least one weight-related health condition such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea. Dr. Riaz will assess your full medical history before recommending any medication.

Can Dr. Riaz refer me for bariatric surgery?

Yes. If you meet the criteria for bariatric surgery — typically a BMI of 40 or higher, or 35 with serious obesity-related conditions — Dr. Riaz can provide a referral to a bariatric surgery specialist. The process involves a thorough medical assessment and may include a multidisciplinary team evaluation.

What is the difference between Ozempic and Wegovy?

Both contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide. Ozempic is approved for Type 2 diabetes management and is available at lower doses. Wegovy is specifically approved for chronic weight management at higher doses. Dr. Riaz will determine which is appropriate based on your diagnosis and health goals.

How long does it take to see results with GLP-1 medications?

Most patients begin to notice reduced appetite within the first few weeks. Meaningful weight loss typically becomes apparent after 8–12 weeks, with maximum benefit seen over 12–18 months of consistent use alongside lifestyle changes. Results vary by individual.

Do I need to make lifestyle changes even if I take medication?

Yes. Medications are most effective when combined with dietary improvements, increased physical activity, and behavioural changes. Dr. Riaz will work with you to develop a comprehensive plan that addresses all aspects of weight management.
